Cinnamon Zone

World from a different angle

It's barbaric, but hey, it's home!

Oh I come from a land from a faraway place
Where the caravan camels roam
Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home!

If you're wondering, thiswas the original song from the opening scene of the 1992 Disney film Aladdin. Being racially charged, for the negative stereotupe it gives about Arabss, the song was changed to the following:

Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place
Where the caravan camels roam
Where it's flat and immense
And the heat is intense
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home

What reminded me of this was something I saw yesterday on TV. This young man in a traditional Arabic costume (turban and all that stuff), singing in a pure wetern style grabbed my attention... It turned out to be a bit of the infamous Star Academy. Now I'm not going to rant about how lame the programme is, but I was sort of scandalised at hearing that neo-Aladdin singing the aforementioned song, both the original and the edited lyrics. An Arab in an Arabic programme on Arabic TV channel.

Does it remind you of something?

Well ... the parrot is strikingly beautiful in that photo :D .. but that's beside the point.

The Aladdin song reminds me of how Persians/Iranians are portrayed so barbarically (or rather beast-like) in the recent movie 300;.

Did you hear about Jack Shaheen's "Reel Bad Arabs"?

z3tr: Reel Bad Arabs, I think I saw the short movie, isn't it the one about hollywood movies's portrayal of Arabs? I don't know if we're talking about the same thing but obviously youu are referring to the book Reel Bad Arabs

Isam, you might have came out with some positive things, but compared to the whole lot of negativity oozing from that programme, it's nothing! They can teach people music without all that real TV fuss. The way Arab youth ambitions are distorted is way too annoying!

maybe yes they can ... but how can they teach millions of ppl what is real music ... the arabic taste in music has descended sharply ... the ears can't know an off-tune (nashaz) when it hears one ... and dont tell me the star academy is ruining our moralities ... cuz all the channels are equally bad or even worst ...
