Wal-Mart, the necessary evil! No single Arab person in the US will admit that they shop there. At least from time to time (If you don't know why; it's because it's a "cheap" place. So people who shop there are viewed as "cheap" and low class) So the big shots go an shop at GAP, Banana Republic and other "fine" stores!

Anyway, I view Wal-Mart as a necessary evil. I have to go there, and get all sort of supplies, from dog food for Tara, to wipes, rags, sprays, soap, socks ...etc. The prices are really cheap on these items and I really don't care to get the "finest" out there since they all have the same brand as the stuff that is being sold in Safeway, wholefoods and other pricy stores.

I guess, we brought our superficial ideology with us here. We all shop there, but HATE IT when people catch us shopping at Wal-Mart!

On my way out I always notice that my English is like crap! I twist everything to make the "cheap labor that wal-mart thrives on" understand what I'm saying!

I found myself breaking every rule in English. Not something that I would normally do (that much). But it's obvious that the more time I spend there talking with people who work there. The worse I sound!

I don't know why I feel that my brain is geared towards the same thing. It's eager to hear the Arabic language around it. But can't get enough of it!

I spent yesterday out shopping, I usually do on the weekend, I find it very relaxing. I got everything I need, discovered that the gas price has gone even higher and that I REALLY have too much stuff in my fridge.

I'm making Fool and Hummos for Sunday Brunch ... And for few precious hours, I will forget where I am

Sounds like a nice plan for the weekend- enjoy :)
I don't think that you can generalize in this. Me and other broke students do some of our shopping there. Mainly for its convenience and low prices, and i haven't seen anyone actually denying it or hiding it :-).

Also, why are you beating down on Arabs ? Many other non-Arabs pretend that they do their shopping at fancier places .. with that said, there are plenty of Arabs (and non-Arabs) that live on their image and try to boast about every single aspect of life.

Anyway, as for the main story (or the title) .. yeah i agree .. i've seen this with myself as well. Whenever i'm around a group of non-English speakers .. my accent kicks in at a much higher degree, and i start butchering English like there is no tomorrow :-) .. even if i understand what they say and they understand me ... i don't know why.
Oh my friend. Just spend some more time around "ladies of the society" and you will see this first hand. Everyone shops at wal-mart, and most will deny they EVER step foot at that "cheap" place!
Ewww, it's so cheap! Although, I personally don't care where I get my stuff! As long as the price is right!

I also didn't mean the Arabs in specific, but it's mostly people with weird accents not that I feel any less of them, it's just that it's a fact that Wal-mart employs slave labor if they had a choice.
Walmart is absolutely my favorite store ever. Yet no one who knows me would call me cheap. I'm just selective as to what I'm willing to spend money on.

Spending an extra $80 on a $5 shirt just becuase it says Armani doesn't mean someone is cheap, it means they're downright stupid.
I unconsciously adopt the accent of the person I'm speaking to. I can't seem to stop myself from doing it. Sometimes people think I'm making fun of their accent!

well, after doing alot of shopping around(on/offline), and especially with the raise now, walmart has almost same prices as other supermarkets (mainly bread and milk)....but u r right, pets food, cleaning stuff n kitchen items r cheaper at walmart!!!
u have ...there we have ...here adn i can hardly understand them when they say a word...
cheers...
two things:
1-How long do you usually spend at Wal-Mart that it alters your accent? are you one of those that inquire about every freakin' aspect of the product at question? Do you want to find out whether your pet prefers IAMS or friskis? Are you one of those retired 60 plus perverts that keep bothering teenage and immigrant workers at Wal-Mart?

2-I agree that there is a large percentage of Arab snobs out there. I shop at Wal-Mart, but as you تفضلت ، I buy brand names that exist everywhere else but Wal-Mart has them for less.
had soog el 7arameyyeh hehe
walmart, ha?

So much for your anti-globalization rhetoric!
afaf, try checking their flyers, the smaller stores can't give as much of a sale because Walmart needs a smaller margin of profit to survive, and can pressure its suppliers more (sometimes it forces a supplier to be exclusive to walmart or lose them).

One thing I'm certain of, Money doesn't buy posh! Money doesn't buy taste. I used to see junk at Versace store, a shirt for $1400 that I wouldn't use as a rag!

Hani2
That's exactly what happens to me!

Afaf
It's not only the workers, but also the people all around you. You wanna hear a 1001 languages all around you? Head to the nearest Wal-Mart

Garfan
1) I would love to leave in a jiffy if I had a chance, but finding a parking alone takes 20 minutes, going through the check out lines takes more than 20 more minutes. And finding someone who works there takes at least 15 more minutes. So you get bombarded by all the influences.
My dog is used to Caesar, Friskis is for cats

2) thanks for agreeing

Abed
Yep, as bad as that!

Thank god I said "cheap labor that wal-mart thrives on" just to indicate that I actually .. hmm well .. don't like it!

Yeah, Wal-mark is the 800Lb gorilla that no body misses with, EXCEPT international stores which are open all around it! They sell like mad only because wal-mart can't even compete with "expired" goods :)

Why would you care who is judging you with what you wipe your bum with? Seriously!

I can get expensive tissues or I cant get a huge pack with 500 ply rolls for 1/3 the price. They're all gonna be filled with crap and piss and other fluids and go in the trash! LOL!

Some people are just too judgmental for no reason - just know that it is because they are lacking!

As for the accents... balash a7ki!
I love Walmart, it saved me a FORTUNE ,
but it's not dirty cheap as it used to be and many other stores are competing with it now
