When angry, Sue!
Hypothetical situation,
What would you do if someone stole money from you and ran away from the country where you can't follow? Would you let it just pass or would you seek legal action?
You would in fact be encouraged to go ahead and seek legal action, get a court order and possibly seize any property that was left behind by the defendant. That is the law. You wouldn't go and break into their house and steal the contents. That's considered theft. Breaking and entering!
So what would you do to someone who creates a short film filled with hate, lies and promotes violence against the general public of Muslims all around the world?
What would you do to someone who falsified accounts, taking words and verses out of their context to serve a specific motive of promoting hate and generalization against Muslims and Islam? What do you do?
You sue the hell out of them! And demand damages for every Islamic business that goes bankrupt due to stereotyping. Every Muslim woman that get harassed. And every Muslim child who feels the bitterness of discrimination.
That's the civilized way.
The law says, you seek justice in the location where you reside. (Not where the plaintiff resides) that's why many Silicon valley companies sue companies outside of silicon valley in California courts.
It's true that these are still in the same country, but they are still valid cases. Countries in Europe sue US companies every day.
What makes the Geert Wilders special is that he has promoted a specific short film that actually promotes hatred, and can be viewed in many ways as the reason why many Muslims around the world would suffer. He's not the only one, but he's guilty without any shadow of a doubt of generalizing and stereotyping. This specific type of prejudice is indistinguishable from anti-Semitism which is punishable under many international laws.
Lets say a British scholar remotely claims that the holocaust is a little bit different than what landed in the history books. Would he not be sued? (I chose this specific example for a reason)
Lets say a French movie maker promoted a movie about Jews showing them murdering children in cold blood, citing verses from the Torah which promote violence towards subhuman species (aka anyone other than Jews) ..etc. What would happen to him? Wouldn't he be sued? Prosecuted, ridiculed, discredited and possibly fired?
The rules of the game have changed, it's no longer a small town affair, it's no longer people suing their neighbor for the harm he has done. The world is a small village, and people are harming each other intercontinental these days. Why would the law have borders?
It's enough to have a warrant for the arrest of someone, anywhere in the world to smear their reputation and attach it with whatever they have done. They can add it in a frame next to the frame they boast as friends of Israel.
You have a problem with that? You have a problem with the right to protest when there is physical harm inflicted on you, your family and your children for generations to come?
If you're still unconvinced that you can sue across boarders, read up on copyright law, or better yet, read what Kurt Westergaard the Danish cartoonist himself decided to do to Geert! He's suing for copyright violation! (BBC) (Someone, in a completely other country, still Europe though.)
For people who thought of lawsuits against Geert, a huge round of applause, and major respect! And whenever Geert thinks to visit Jordan, he will have a warrant for his arrest ready for him at the airport, and possibly in every single Islamic country in the world. Possibly even in some justice loving nations elsewhere!

Memories....
I hope some Hollanders, as savers of humanity, will come and sue our parliament, who supported impunity for honor killings once. as this doesnt seem right to them , the same way some stupid useless film doesnt seem right to us.
So to our people who thought of lawsuits against Geert I would say, Go find soemthing more important if you cared really about Quran and know very well, that For God, one human soul is trillions of times more important than Quran, and trillion is the highest number i know. ooh if they knew... and if they have time they dont know what to do with then I suggest football, its really good for the health. seriously.
Chika...
Now now ... we don't want to go around bashing people's heads if we're angry :). That's really not the right way to handle these matters
MD,
You know MD, although, I have a strong position against honor killings, I find that to be a red herring and not related to this matter.
On the other hand, I promise you to ask my Dutch friend who served in the Dutch parliament and give you an answer regarding honor killings and what is the Dutch way of handling these matters because I frankly don't know.
This is just a showing off, like every other thing that goes on in our muslim communities, I think that the Al Qaeda and such have made more damage to Islam than this silly guy, so why didnt they think of sueing them, why start in the wrong place? just showing off like always.
Each country has its set of laws, you can abide people around the world with each country individual law. If there is an international law that governs special laws, then yes, why not? Go ahead and sue. It is your right, but you can't sue people living in another countries, following different sets of law, in your own country sets of laws!
As far as I know al Qaeda are wanted in every Arab country. So that's not far from what you're saying
But this issue is different than Al Qaeda and Honor killings and it has it's specifics and consequences. If putting the guy to trial is going to calm the angry mob and cause them to stay away from destroying embassies. Then It's worth a shot.
Arab observer, No that's not my logic and I fail to understand how you barge unrelated issues to the matter here. This is not the same thing
However, If you do something to say, cause a Saudi person to get harmed, then someone in Saudi would have the right to sue you.
I think the concept is simple really! now don't tell me that what if someone farted in china and it's against the laws of America. It's NOT the same thing. What I'm saying Someone did "X" and caused someone to get harmed in country "Y". Then he bears the consequences!
Justice should know no borders!
still again and again, we have millions of things to do before this step,,millions of steps in Jordan.
kidding Q ;-)
L2 bs wallahi i second you 100% in what you say...
That was my nightmare when I was in uni... you wanna object, GO CIVILIZED!!!
Especially in such a controvercial issue as Geert's movie... this 'men ta7et la ta7et' job is no longer working...
I still beleive it's very hard for the world to go unfair all at once...
In today's world, a case in a certain country is every country's case... and the international laws are not that spoiled!!
So cheers for those who raise their voices and sue the abusers under the sun!!!
People think that the point behind suing here is to prevent freedom of speech. When it's not even related to freedom of speech. It's seeking damages of the pain and suffering they are put through by people stereotyping them.
In the US (where I live) everyone sues everyone! People sue Mcdonalds because they're fat. Others sue hotels because they slipped (not tripped where they would be at fault)
There's nothing wrong with seeking damages when harm has been done, and this is exactly the case here.
and I would like to see people sue for honor killings as well!
Sure, we can sue people who did harm. But why does this mean that we let this one pass? Lets do all of the at the same time
Naryat
Thank you, that's what I was trying to say. Lets protest peacefully, lets reject in a civilized way. Lets teach people a lesson the right way. Instead of shouting like angry mobs and start smashing windows and burn cars in the street!
Hatem,
Thank you very for your wishes, I highly appreciate it.
Faten
Thanks. Yes, why not start suing people who perform honor killings?! I bet if someone starts that, many will follow
I want to sue Reem Shawarma for making me crave it so much :)
The issue is really simple, but I'm sorry you just can't be convinced. I guess we'll agree to disagree. You have every right not to agree. I have every right to think you're wrong. Especially when people are suffering because of hate speech like that. But what do I know? I don't live in the west, and I don't see this everyday.
