Of course, every movie that touches Arab or Islamic culture is a special interest to me, I have to check it out and to a certain extent, scrutinize it a bit more than the others

The movie opens to a scene where Samir (the main character) is praying with his father in Sudan, it was clear that he was the victim of violence that seeps through the Middle East wherever you go.

The movie gets really slow at times, while the characters develop. Which is fine, but that's not the end of it. It actually makes some very compelling points with only one problem. They're presented using the western understanding of how martyr, Jihad and the rest of the Jihadist-101 terms are defined.

There appears to be a problem in the west in general while trying to understand what makes a martyr, or what drives someone to make the ultimate sacrifice? Not to mention how some young enthusiastic kids are brainwashed to take out the most heinous actions in the name of religion

Additionally, many don't appear to understand that this Manchurian-candidate type of sleeper-cell and society impregnated with terrorists who mingle and dissolve in it for years before they're called to duty is filled with more holes than some prime Swiss cheese. It just doesn't work that way!

Do you want to know how it works? Or more specifically, "How to make a martyr?".

The process is really simple; it's tried and proven to work it starts by taking the most important thing from any human.  Hope...

Once that is gone, just oppress this person, his family. Demolish their home, imprison all his friends, siblings and family. Confiscate their land, break their arms and legs for protesting, imprison his whole nation in walls. Repeat the same process for few million people over the course of 60 years and you will get a chance of 1 in 10,000 to get a martyr out of that nation. But all of that will not get you anywhere if you forget to do some world class directed brainwashing

These martyrs didn't come from vacuum, they were created, engineered by people who opportunistically hijacked people's misery and suffering to brainwash them to serve their horrible goals. They've put on such a show for the American public, and the whole world.

That's the main point missed by this movie, that appears to be few years too late. Although, I have to admit I felt afraid to walk out of the theatre, but thankfully, I haven't had any issues. I'm just hoping the red neck lady sitting next to me on the flight with a huge "Southern Pride" tattoo on her upper thigh didn't watch it.

Memories....

I think at the time when the word martyr was coined, each living body made a difference, because people fought with swords. Nowadays, it's meaningless, because you could have an army of 2,000,000 martyrs wiped out with 2 B52s. So you might as well call it suicide rather than martyrdom since it no longer helps any cause.
I disagree Hani,
Martyrdom means paying the ultimate sacrifice for a cause. It's not how these people die that matters, it's how they lived.

In other words, "A man who won't die for something is not fit to live"
Hello... wow it has been a while i didn't comment any blog...

well as for the martyr issue between you and hani... as the killing machine developed, the martyr definition has developed as well...

for example in the old ages when anyone fought a war in order to defend a cause he was killed, no one will know about him until after a while.. and this while might be very long time in our definition

but as the communication developed in our era the martyrdom has become something that can be used to let other people know that there is a whole nation is fighting for its freedom...

and this purpose does not do take the honor for the person who did the ultimate sacrifice, instead he died for his cause to live.. and that is ultimate sacrifice multiplied by 2 for me

sorry it is long... BAS ANA mestanfer after 2 months period
Interesting approach to the matter, I agree with it actually.
