Day 1 As A Working Girl

Hmmm......I guess u want details huh? Details would be boring, so here are the highlights:

6am : I don't know what to wear. Out of all the new clothes I bought especially for work I chose something that isn't that new really, only cuz the colour suited me.

6.45am : Late, no time for breakfast. (BIG MISTAKE) Why? Lets just say my tummy isn't very discreet when empty ;P

6.55am : I get caught in traffic. Not good since I had to be there at 7.15. I pass the time listening to this and this, and they somehow calm my nerves.

7.35am : Arrive. I'm not late afterall, morning meeting had just finished.

7.40am : Get the necessary paperwork done.

7.45am : I meet my supervisor. Suprisingly I had the choice of which unit I wanted cuz the other newbies hadn't turned up yet. I take a leap of faith and chose the toughest strictest unit. Don't ask me why.

8am : I'm assigned to the male ward and a fellow trainee gives me a short brief on things I need to know.

8.30am : I learn that a friend of mine who graduated with me, a very smart and above average student might I add, had been with my unit for 4 days and then decided to leave and go to another hospital! Was I freaked? YES! Was i doubting my decison? YES!!!!!!

9ish: The round begins. We're joined by 2 medical students on their first day too. So its only obvious that they hadn't brushed up on their medicine yet. Anything they couldnt answer was automatically directed to me and lets just say my senior was not very impressed with me :( which is a shame since I was praised by her on more than one occasion as a student.

10am: Still in rounds.

11am: Still in rounds.

12pm: Still in rounds.

1pm: Still in rounds.

2pm: Still in rounds.

Yes, they lasted that long! I lost the feeling in my soles! My lower back was killing me. I'm the kind of person that can't handle standing at all! Not for 5 mins. I couldn't sit down cuz everyone was on their feet, so I took it as a hint that sitting down during rounds was a total No-No with this crowd.

My senior asked me to take 2 ABG's already! Y3ni basically to take a blood sample from an artery not a vein like you normally get done when you take a routine blood sample. I've never done it before. So, I guess Day 1 and I've already learnt something.

I already know a few of the people in my team so thats good. The rest were really friendly and helpful and kept on checking on me to see how I was holding up.

Tomorrow is my first on-call and I will probably be assigned a case ;/ I wish they would give me 1 week of observing.

And girls, I'm telling you min il7en, I'm not going to talk about any McDreamy's or McSteamy's ;P mako mako mako ! I was too busy dodging bullets to notice anyone. There will be no drama coming from this blog. Do you hear me??

Hmmm what else.....oh does anyone know where they sell nice sleeping bags? I guess I have to start putting together an overnight bag.

I'm really sleepy but I promised myself that I wouldn't take an afternoon nap so I sleep early at 9pm. And yes I know 9pm is early, but last night I went to bed at 7pm and I was yawning all day, it was embarrassing, it makes me look bored and tired when I'm not. It's just cuz I wasn't doing anything but watching.

I guess I'm gonna hit the nearest Starbucks and take some books with me, its the only way to stay awake. I can't look like a dork 2mrw when they ask me stuff.

And really, you have to tell me where they sell sleeping bags??

meh .... first days are the worst .... they always feel so awkward.... as for the ABG's well thats the price you pay for going into a medical unit from the start. Most people start in peads ....

E I noticed. I figured I wanted the a good foundation. I need a good foundation. Im a methodical learner and its difficult for me to learn something when i know step 1 or 2 r missing....does that make sense?

There is this place called Ace in Shwaeikh.. I think they have camping stuff :)
I'm not sure where it is but I can ask someone if you want..

8.30am : You shouldn't freak... maybe your friend wasn't able to fit in. This doesn't HAVE to apply to you :)

Why do you feel so weired? didn't you spend 3 years in the hospital already? (the old teaching system)

I think Sears in Farwaniya sells sleeping bags, and I'm almost sure that Go Sport in Avenues sells them as well. They're camping gear, nothing fancy, but decent enough.

Gah, rounds sound exhausting and boring. I hate getting called on to answer a question, I much prefer volunteering information.

You picked the toughest dept? Why the masochism?

I am not in Kuwait to answer you about the sleeping bags. However, I am just wishing you the best sweetie.

Don't freak out and don't ever compare yourself to people who haven't lasted because that will keep you always a step late
